A four-member Russian mountaineering team has obtained a climbing permit to attempt Gangapurna West (Lachenal), a 7,140-metre peak in the Annapurna region that remains unclimbed despite previous expeditions.
Expedition operators said today that climbing activities on Mt Dhaulagiri had resumed after weather conditions improved following torrential rain and heavy snowfall that hit the mountain region a few days ago.
Expedition operators have mobilised additional climbers and route-opening and rope-fixing teams to ensure the trekking route from Koto to Himlung Himal Base Camp is safe and accessible following an avalanche that left one person missing.
After pausing expeditions on Mount Dhaulagiri for nearly a week, many climbers who returned to the mountain have already reached above Camp I in an attempt to scale the world’s seventh-highest peak.
The rope-fixing team on Mount Dhaulagiri has reached about 400 metres above Camp II as autumn expedition teams prepare for higher-altitude rotations and summit attempts.
