KATHMANDU: American climber Art Muir, 79, has become the oldest person ever to complete the Seven Summits, the highest peaks on each of the seven continents.

Muir reached the summit of Carstensz Pyramid (4,884m), the highest mountain in Oceania, at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, October 21, alongside Norwegian mountaineer Kristin Harila and Garrett Madison of Madison Mountaineering.

Harila, who shared the news on social media, praised Muir’s strength and spirit, describing him as “incredibly strong, calm, and inspiring, and one of the kindest people I know.”

Garrett Madison said the climb was a memorable one, noting that Muir, at 79 and a half, likely became the oldest person to summit Carstensz Pyramid and complete the Seven Summits. “It was a wonderful climb with stunning views from the top — a truly special day for Art and the whole team,” Madison said.

The ascent of Carstensz Pyramid marks the culmination of Muir’s Seven Summits quest, a rare and remarkable feat in global mountaineering, especially at his age.
