KATHMANDU: Polish ski mountaineer Andrzej Bargiel has abandoned his planned solo summit attempt and ski descent of Mt Dhaulagiri after waiting at Camp 2, where high winds and extreme mountain conditions prevented him from proceeding.

The Red Bull athlete has returned to base camp and is expected to fly to Kathmandu by helicopter shortly.

Bargiel had remained at Camp 2 while preparing for a solo summit attempt and a ski descent from the 8,167-metre peak without supplementary oxygen. The attempt was dependent on weather and mountain conditions.

Other climbers had already called off their summit attempts after encountering fragile snow conditions and strong winds above Camp 3. Bargiel’s plan was reported to be his first and final attempt on Dhaulagiri this season.

The 38-year-old is known for completing ski descents from several 8,000-metre peaks without supplementary oxygen, including K2, Everest and Nanga Parbat. He made the first complete ski descent of K2 in 2018 and skied from Everest’s summit to base camp in 2025.
