KATHMANDU: A Chinese woman climber died below Camp I after being struck by a rockfall while descending from the summit of K2, the world’s second highest mountain.
According to sources, Guan Jing lost her life between Camp I and Advanced Base Camp (ABC) along the Abruzzi Spur route on Tuesday night after rocks tumbled down the slope. She had successfully summited the mountain alongside other climbers on Monday.
The route between ABC and Camp I on K2 is known to be highly prone to rockfalls, sources noted. Other climbers who achieved the rare feat of summiting K2 this season are now making their way back to base camp. Efforts are currently underway to recover Guan’s body, sources added.
More than 30 climbers reached the summit on Monday.
