KATHMANDU: A climbing Sherpa died in the Mt. Everest region while guiding a team of international climbers to Everest Base Camp, officials said.
According to Gyanendra Shrestha, a liaison officer for the Everest expedition, Lakpa Dendi Sherpa, 52, from Gudel, Solukhumbu, died after falling while hiking from Gorakshep to Base Camp on Sunday afternoon.
“Sherpa was part of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Everest Expedition 2026,” Shrestha said, adding that his body was brought to his home village. The incident occurred when the team reached around 5,200 meters near Everest Base Camp, he added.
This is the first casualty of the season, as over 465 foreign climbers, along with support staff, have headed to the Everest region to attempt to climb the world’s highest peak, said the Department of Tourism.
