KATHMANDU: Climbers Nima Rinji Sherpa and Italian alpinist Simone Moro have completed the first phase of their acclimatization for a planned winter ascent of Manaslu.
In a post on Wednesday, Nima Rinji said they left High Camp at 7:30 AM and reached the summit at 9:50 AM, completing the climb in 2 hours and 20 minutes. The pair began their acclimatization after departing Kathmandu on December 3.
Their logistics are managed by 14 Peaks Expedition, which is overseeing preparations for the winter attempt.
The duo aims to climb the 8,163-metre peak in pure alpine style—without supplemental oxygen, Sherpa support, fixed ropes or a large base camp. They aborted a similar attempt last winter due to severe weather.
The climbers will continue acclimatizing on Mera Peak before heading to Manaslu. A Polish videographer will join them to document the ascent.
Moro, who has made six winter attempts on Manaslu since 2015, is known for first winter ascents of four eight-thousanders. Nima Rinji is the youngest person to summit all 14 peaks above 8,000 metres.
