KATHMANDU: Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) President Phur Gelje Sherpa has contributed NPR 2 million to the association’s Welfare Fund, fulfilling a key pledge from his recent election campaign.
Sherpa, who was elected NMA president on August 23, 2025, officially took office on September 8 and handed over the cheque to Treasurer Sumi Moktan during the first meeting of the new Executive Board that same day.
The Welfare Fund provides scholarships to children whose parents lost their lives while working in the mountains. This year alone, the program is supporting 57 students.
According to the NMA, the association currently holds about NPR 20 million in fixed deposits across several funds, including the Welfare Fund. The interest generated is used to finance the education of orphaned children from mountaineering families.
Sherpa’s contribution strengthens the fund’s capacity to assist Nepal’s mountain communities and underscores his commitment to the welfare of families who have lost loved ones in high-altitude expeditions.
