KATHMANDU: A Sherpa climber died near Camp III on Mt Everest, taking the season's death toll on the world's highest peak to three.

According to a base camp official, Phura Gyaljen Sherpa, a 21-year-old climber from Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality – Ward 5, Thame, Solukhumbu, died after falling from Camp III when a large team of climbers headed towards the South Col to prepare for the summit push last night. "He fell into a crevasse from Camp III and died on the spot."

The climber was part of Kaitu Expeditions, according to officials. "Recovery efforts are being planned to airlift his body from the high camp," said Dr. Nima Namgyal Sherpa, owner of Kaitu Expeditions.

Phura Gyaljen was the grandson of the legendary climber Ang Rita Sherpa, who earned the famous nickname “Snow Leopard.” Ang Rita is the only mountaineer to have reached the summit of Everest ten times without using supplemental oxygen. He also remains the sole individual to have achieved an oxygen-free ascent of Everest during the winter season.

Earlier, two climbers – Bijay Ghimire Bishwakarma and Lakpa Dendi Sherpa – died in the Everest region, where hundreds of climbers are eyeing a summit push on Mt Everest this season.
