KATHMANDU: At least two Indian climbers died while descending from the summit of Mt Everest, said an expedition organiser.

Nivesh Karki, director at Pioneer Adventures, confirmed that one Indian climber died near the Hillary Step, just below the summit, while another breathed his last at Camp II.

The deceased have been identified as Arun Kumar Tiwari and Sandeep Are. Tiwari died near the Hillary Step while being assisted by four Sherpa climbers during the descent, said Karki. Are breathed his last at Camp II immediately after being brought there by five Sherpa rescuers.

Both climbers scaled Mt Everest on May 21 and fell ill during their descent, according to Karki. Another Indian climber is being rescued from the South Col, Karki shared.

The season’s death toll on Everest has now reached five, with three Nepali climbers having died earlier.
