Nepal Tourism Board issues travel advisory for tourists ahead of March 5 polls

KATHMANDU: Tourists travelling in Nepal on election day should be aware that all domestic flights will be suspended on March 5, 2026, the day of the House of Representatives election, the Nepal Tourism Board has announced through a travel advisory issued for visitors.

International flights, however, will continue to operate as normal.

Nepal's land border crossings will close 72 hours before the election, effectively from March 2, and tourists planning to enter or exit Nepal via land routes should factor this into their travel plans.

Despite the restrictions, Nepal will remain open and safe for tourists throughout the election period, the Board assured, adding that it is coordinating with all relevant stakeholders to ensure visitor safety and convenience during the polls. Hotels, resorts, restaurants and major historical sites across the country will remain open on election day.

Airport-hotel transfers on election day

To ease movement for tourists on election day, the Nepal Tourism Board has made arrangements to assist transport companies wishing to operate shuttle services between the airport and hotels. The Board has designated a contact person to provide the necessary recommendation letters to the District Administration Office, Kathmandu for vehicle passes covering the airport-to-hotel and hotel-to-airport sectors.

Tour operators and transport companies seeking to run tourist vehicle services on election day are requested to fill out the required forms and submit the necessary documents in two signed copies to the Nepal Tourism Board.

Tourists and travel operators are advised to plan their itineraries accordingly and stay in touch with their respective hotels, tour operators and airlines for updates closer to the election date.
