KATHMANDU: The Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon is scheduled to return to Nepal’s Everest region on May 29, 2027, with organisers inviting both Nepali and international runners to compete in races ranging from 21 kilometres to 70 kilometres.

The event, promoted as one of the world’s highest-altitude marathon events, will be held in the Everest region, with the course taking runners through high-altitude Himalayan terrain, including glacial moraines and Sherpa settlements.

According to the organisers’ latest promotional post, the event will feature three race categories: a 70-kilometre ultra race, a 42-kilometre marathon and a 21-kilometre half-marathon.

The marathon is organised in the Everest region and is associated with the legacy of Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary, whose successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953 became a landmark in mountaineering history.

The organisers are targeting national and international runners, marathon and trail-running enthusiasts, as well as adventure seekers interested in high-altitude endurance events.

The event’s promotional material highlights the demanding nature of running at high altitude, where participants must contend with thin air and rugged Himalayan terrain while crossing some of the most remote landscapes in the Everest region.

The race is also positioned as an adventure and mountain tourism event, combining endurance sports with the region’s natural and cultural attractions.
