KATHMANDU: The Karnali Tourism Meet-2026 has commenced in Birendranagar, Surkhet, bringing together policymakers, tourism entrepreneurs, local governments, and Indian tourism representatives to chart a course for positioning Karnali as a competitive international destination.

Organised by Nepal Tourism Board and Birendranagar Municipality under the slogan "In the Lap of Nature and Culture," the three-day event was inaugurated by Karnali Province Minister for Industry, Tourism, Forest, and Environment Suresh Adhikari, alongside Tourism Ministry Secretary Mukunda Prasad Niraula, NTB Officiating CEO Hikmat Singh Ayer, and other senior officials and stakeholders.

Speakers underscored Karnali's depth as a tourism product, rich in Himalayan culture, spirituality, biodiversity, and adventure. Minister Adhikari called for international branding of destinations including Rara, Shey-Phoksundo, Dolpa, Humla, Kakrebihar, and the Gurans region. Secretary Niraula described Karnali as a "living museum" offering visitors an immersive experience of local lifestyles and cultural heritage.

NTB Officiating CEO Ayer identified India as a priority market, pointing to Karnali's accessibility, cool climate, and unique Himalayan appeal as key draws for Indian travellers. Local leaders also highlighted Surkhet's growing role as the gateway to Karnali and a potential corridor for Kailash Mansarovar tourism.

Indian tourism entrepreneurs at the event expressed interest in promoting Karnali packages in the Indian market.

The programme also featured academic presentations and cultural performances including Deuda and Hudke dances, alongside discussions on investment, infrastructure, and service quality.

Familiarisation trips to Dailekh, Gurans Hill Station, Gothikanda, and other sites have been arranged for Indian tour operators and journalists.
