Nepalis urged to stay alert as fraud cases target both aspiring migrants and residents in the UK

KATHMANDU: The Embassy of Nepal in London has issued a warning to Nepali citizens following a rise in fraud cases linked to fake job sponsorship and work visa offers in the United Kingdom.

In a public notice, the embassy said it has received a significant number of complaints from Nepalis who were cheated under the pretext of being provided work sponsorships. Victims include both Nepalis seeking to travel to the UK from Nepal and those already residing in the UK.

According to the embassy, some of the fraudsters are Nepali-origin individuals, while others have deceived victims through acquaintances who introduced them to third-country nationals. The embassy said such scams are often organised in nature, involving multiple individuals working directly or indirectly.

The notice stated that perpetrators typically conceal their real identities, use different names, avoid sharing permanent addresses, frequently change contact numbers, and eventually disappear after collecting money. To evade legal action in the UK and avoid leaving evidence, fraudsters often collect money in Nepal and refrain from using bank transactions within the UK.

The embassy has urged Nepali citizens to remain cautious of anyone offering job sponsorships or work visas in exchange for money. It also reminded the public that such crimes are punishable under the laws of both Nepal and the United Kingdom.

Victims have been advised to file complaints with investigation agencies in Nepal, as well as local police units and the UK’s National Anti-Fraud Network (Action Fraud). Those affected may also contact the Nepal Embassy in London via info@nepembassy.org.uk
 or +44 7404 939274 for assistance.
