KATHMANDU: Nepal has been recognised as the "Most Charming Tourism Destination" at the Guangzhou International Travel Fair (GITF) 2026, held from May 21–23 in China, as Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) wrapped up a multi-city promotional push targeting the Chinese market.
NTB coordinated Nepal's participation at the three-day fair under the theme "Nepal: A Lifetime Experience," with Senior Manager Bimal Kadel and Senior Officer Pradip Basnet representing the board. Kadel delivered a country presentation on Nepal's tourism offerings and participated in a panel discussion on marketing strategies. The Nepal stall featured a spin-and-win lucky draw and showcased Nepali singing bowls as part of a wellness tourism experience.
Eight Nepali travel and tourism companies joined NTB at the fair, Adventure Outdoor Treks and Expedition, Buddha Maya Gardens, Dragon Holidays, Hotel Manang, Outdoor Expeditions, Pearl Holidays, Social Treks and Expedition, and The Trek Nepal, presenting tour, trekking, and hospitality packages to potential visitors and travel trade professionals. A traditional Nepali cultural dance performance and destination presentation on the opening day drew strong interest from Chinese visitors.
The Guangzhou participation followed a Nepal tourism promotion and B2B networking event held in Shenzhen on May 20, organised by the Consulate General of Nepal in Guangzhou in coordination with NTB at The Ritz-Carlton, Shenzhen. Around 80 participants from media, travel trade, business, and the non-resident Nepali community attended. Consul General Bharat Khanal highlighted Nepal-China diplomatic relations and tourism prospects, while Shenzhen Tourism Association Vice President Wang Tao expressed commitment to expanding tourism cooperation.
Kadel's Shenzhen presentation highlighted Nepal's wellness tourism potential, including yoga and meditation, and underscored the government's declaration of Nepal Wellness Year 2027 and the UN-adopted observance of Wellness Day on April 15.
Nepal Airlines and China Southern Airlines currently operate direct flights between Kathmandu and Guangzhou, strengthening connectivity for Chinese visitors.
