KATHMANDU: Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) has reopened after being shut down for two consecutive days due to violent demonstrations that swept across the Kathmandu Valley earlier this week.

According to a statement from the TIA Civil Aviation Office, the decision came after the airport’s security committee met on Wednesday and concluded that flight operations could safely resume. Both domestic and international services, suspended since September 9, are now back in operation.

The temporary shutdown was triggered after protests led by Gen Z demonstrators turned violent, with reports of fires and vandalism in areas such as Gothatar. Aviation authorities, citing rising security concerns, halted all flights while the Nepali Army was deployed to protect the airport premises.

Airlines have urged travelers to reconfirm their tickets and baggage arrangements as carriers work to address the significant backlog of passengers and cargo caused by the two-day disruption.

Among them, Buddha Air announced the restart of its scheduled flights from early morning on Thursday, September 11, with bookings available via its website, mobile app, and travel agents.

The closure had left both international tourists and domestic passengers stranded in Kathmandu during one of the busiest times of the year for travel. With the autumn trekking and expedition season now underway, the swift resumption of flights is expected to bring much-needed relief to Nepal’s tourism and aviation sectors.

Authorities confirmed that operations will proceed under enhanced security arrangements to ensure uninterrupted services in the coming days.
