Flights suspended as Gen Z-led demonstrations escalate; curfews imposed and fatalities reported in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), Nepal’s only international aviation hub, has been fully closed as anti-corruption protests intensified across the Kathmandu Valley on Tuesday.

Airport authorities said multiple fire incidents in areas including Gothatar and mounting aviation security risks prompted the suspension of all domestic and international flights.

The Nepali Army has been deployed to secure the airport premises.

The shutdown comes in the midst of Gen Z-led demonstrations that began as a protest against the corruption. The protests have since spread across the Valley and across the country, voicing anger over corruption, mismanagement, and curbs on civil freedoms.

On Monday alone, 19 protesters lost their lives during protest in New Baneshwor, Kathmandu and Itahari, and hundreds injured. In response, district administrations in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kavre, Biratnagar, and Birgunj have issued curfew orders, barring movement and public gatherings in affected areas.

The disruptions have severely affected with hundreds of passengers stranded in Kathmandu and other airports of the country.
