236 climbers from 49 countries receive Spring 2026 permits as Nepal opens Himalayan season

KATHMANDU: A total of 236 climbers from 49 countries and territories have received permits to climb in Nepal this spring, according to data released by the Department of Tourism under the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation.
The figures cover March 1 to April 5, 2026, with 31 teams registered across 15 peaks — 171 male and 65 female — generating total royalties of $1,349,930 USD (NPR. 202,200,717) for the government.
Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) has attracted the highest concentration of permitted climbers this season, with 73 climbers across eight teams — 56 male and 17 female — cleared to attempt the world's highest peak. The mountain alone accounts for $1,095,000 USD in royalties, roughly 81 percent of all revenue collected to date this season.
Ama Dablam is the second most popular objective by headcount, with 34 climbers across three teams registered for the technical Khumbu peak. Annapurna I has drawn 27 climbers across four teams, Dhaulagiri I has 17 climbers, and Himlung Himal 15. Lhotse has 12 climbers permitted, Annapurna IV eight, and Makalu I five. Tengkoma and Khangri Shar round out the season's roster with three and two climbers respectively.
Germany climbers are the most this season with 37 climbers — 28 male and 9 female — ahead of the United States with 25 (21 male, 4 female) and Canada with 17 (13 male, 4 female). Poland has 15 climbers permitted, all but one male.
The United Kingdom has 12 climbers registered this spring, while Ireland and Russia each have 11, and India 10. Vietnam, with 9 permitted climbers, ranks among the more active Asian nations alongside Japan (6), China (4), and Nepal itself, which has 3 climbers registered under foreign expedition permits.
Switzerland has 8 climbers, Australia and France 7 each, and Spain 4. Finland and Norway each have 2, while American Samoa has a single registered climber.
The season remains active. Updated permit and summit data will be published by the Department of Tourism as the season progresses.
