KATHMANDU: Anita Karki, an Assistant Head Constable with the Armed Police Force Nepal, has written her name into the institution's history by becoming its first female mountaineer to summit Mount Everest.

Karki reached the top of the world at 10:20 am on Sunday along with her climbing guide Ngima Sange Sherpa as part of the 8K Expeditions team, led by Lakpa Sherpa. She is the third APF personnel to summit Everest and the first woman among them.

Trained in mountain rescue and high-altitude operations at the APF's own Mountain Rescue Training School, Karki has previously climbed Chulu Far East and Lobuche in the Manang district.

What makes Karki's achievement particularly remarkable is that she excels in two entirely different arenas. Away from the mountains, she is one of Nepal's top fencers, representing the APF Club at national competitions and regularly claiming gold in the women's individual epee division at the National Fencing Championships.

The APF said her historic climb is expected to inspire greater participation and leadership among women within the force.
