KATHMANDU: A 75-year-old American mountaineer has completed the Seven Summits Challenge after reaching the top of Mount Everest on May 18, 2026, making him one of the oldest climbers to finish the coveted series of ascents.
Viorel "Wally" Stirbu, a retired engineer with the Chicago Fire Department, summited Everest with the support of 14 Peaks Expedition's Sherpa team, capping a remarkable mountaineering journey that has spanned multiple continents and the world's highest peaks. His Everest ascent came less than a year after he stood atop Mount Manaslu (8,163m), also with 14 Peaks Expedition, at the age of 74.
The Seven Summits Challenge requires climbers to reach the highest point on each of the world's seven continents, with Everest (8,848.86m) representing the ultimate culmination of the quest.
"From standing on the summit of Mt. Manaslu at the age of 74 to now reaching the top of the world on Everest, Wally's journey is a powerful reminder that determination, courage, and passion know no age limit," Tashi Lakpa Sherpa, chief executive office of 14 Peaks Expeditions said.
Tashi Lakpa expressed pride at having been part of what it called a historic achievement, extending congratulations to Stirbu on the milestone.
