KATHMANDU: Just hours after good news, a British deaf climber faced difficulties in the death zone on Mt Everest while descending from the summit late this afternoon.

British deaf mountaineer and BBC Sign Language presenter Michael Joseph Woods lost contact for a while and is now being rescued by four Sherpa climbers from the South Summit, said an expedition organiser.

“A Sherpa climber and Woods are being rescued by other climbers now,” said Lakpa Sherpa, Managing Director at 8K Expeditions.

“Woods and one of his guides are being brought from the triangular face,” Lakpa added. The details of the incident are still sketchy.

Woods, a BBC BSL TV presenter, undertook the Everest climb as part of his Seven Summits challenge — an attempt to scale the highest peak on each of the seven continents. His primary motivation is fundraising for the National Deaf Children's Society, which has supported his six-year-old son from an early age. During acclimatisation, he climbed Lobuche Peak before committing to the Everest summit push.
