KATHMANDU: An eight-member team from 8K Expeditions successfully summited Mt. Makalu (8,485m) on Sunday morning, adding to what is shaping up as one of the busiest seasons on the world's fifth highest peak.
The summit team comprised IFMGA guide Markus Richard Bolt, Paul Reid Clarke, Saeed Khameis Beraheim Mahyos Almemari, VR, IFMGA guide Ashok Lama, Kamdorji Sherpa, Pema Rinje Sherpa, and Nawang Sherpa.
The team is now descending, with other 8K Expeditions climbers at Base Camp completing their acclimatisation rotations and preparing for their own summit push, weather permitting.
Makalu, located in Nepal's Mahalangur Himal range on the border with Tibet, is widely regarded as one of the most technically demanding of the world's 14 eight-thousanders, characterised by steep faces, sharp ridges, and demanding alpine conditions that test even the most experienced high-altitude climbers.
8K Expeditions acknowledged Base Camp Manager Pemba R. Sherpa for his coordination and logistical support throughout the expedition.
The summit comes a day after Lakpa Sherpa, widely known as Makalu Lakpa, reached the same summit for a record ninth time as part of a Seven Summit Treks team, and Bangladeshi mountaineer Babar Ali made history as the first from his country to stand on Makalu's top. The mountain is seeing an unusually active summit window this spring.
