KATHMANDU: The joint rope-fixing team on Mt Everest made further progress on Tuesday, laying fixed ropes approximately 350 metres above Camp III, with the South Col now expected to be reached by May 7 or 8.

"The team is progressing steadily and is expected to reach the South Col by May 7th or 8th," said Chhang Dawa Sherpa, Director at Seven Summit Treks, who said he is personally coordinating the operation. "With Camp III now established and ropes fixed higher, the route is open for load ferrying and acclimatization rotations."

The nine-member rope-fixing team carried out the first section of Tuesday's fixing with support from the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) and the Expedition Operators Association Nepal (EOAN), with the EOAN Sherpa team handling the upper section independently.

Earlier on Tuesday, The Tourism Times reported that the route to Camp III on Everest and Lhotse had been fixed by the joint EOAN team, with lead guides Kilu Sherpa and Pasang Ngima Sherpa reaching Camp III to pitch tents for acclimatization rotations. Expedition operators have said they expect summit pushes to begin by the end of the second week of May, weather permitting.
