Gas leak suspected as cause; nine rooms gutted, reconstruction efforts underway
KATHMANDU: A fire broke out at a lodge in Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m) on Tuesday afternoon, destroying property but causing no human casualties, according to reports circulating on social media and local sources.
The incident occurred at Peaceful Lodge and Restaurant at around 4:30 pm, reportedly due to a gas cylinder leak. The blaze completely gutted nine rooms, along with food supplies and other materials, leaving the lodge severely damaged.
Despite the lodge being at full capacity, all tourists—mostly foreign nationals—were safely evacuated. However, some of their personal belongings were lost in the fire.
The fire was brought under control with the help of local residents and fellow trekkers present in the area.
Local resident Dilip Gurung said the incident was distressing, but expressed relief that no lives were lost despite the presence of many tourists at the lodge.
Following the incident, the Chhomrong Tourism Management Committee has stepped in to provide financial and material support for reconstruction. Local tourism entrepreneurs and community members have also been urged to contribute.
According to local stakeholders, there is a collective effort to rebuild the lodge within two months and resume services for trekkers in the Annapurna region.
