KATHMANDU: A team of Italian and Austrian climbers has successfully summited Mt. Kimshung (6,781m), also known as Tsangbu Ri, in Nepal’s Langtang National Park, establishing a new route on the mountain’s northeast face. The ascent was made on October 20, according to Chhang Dawa Sherpa, expedition director at Seven Summit Treks.

The climbers — Italians Francois Cazzanelli, Giuseppe Vidoni, and Damiano Levati, along with Austrians Benjamin Zoerer and Lukas Waldner — completed what was only the seventh recorded attempt on this demanding Himalayan peak near the Tibetan border.

They left base camp on October 19 and spent the night at 5,450 metres near the Kimshung Glacier before reaching the summit at 12:30 p.m. the following day. The team safely descended to the valley by 7:00 p.m., Sherpa said.

Their newly established route, named “Destiny” and graded TD, 1,300m, 60°, AI4, M5, reflects both the technical difficulty and the shared spirit that brought the climbers together.

"The name was chosen for the many stories that converged beneath this mountain—including the meeting of the four climbers—who return home not only with a proud ascent, but above all, with a great new friendship," said Sherpa.

Situated in the Langtang Valley north of Kathmandu, Kimshung remains one of Nepal’s lesser-known yet technically demanding peaks.
