KATHMANDU: While most teenagers celebrate the end of their Secondary Education Examination (SEE) with rest and fun, 16-year-old Tshering Pasang Sherpa decided to stand on top of the world.

On May 20, 2026, at exactly 10:05 AM, the teenager successfully reached the top of Mount Everest. He officially became the second-youngest Nepali male in history to climb the world’s highest peak at just 16 years and 167 days old.

Tshering’s journey showed great patience and strength. It was led by Glacier Himalaya Treks & Expeditions and supported by his guide, Da Kaljang Sherpa. Before climbing Everest, he also successfully climbed Mt. Lobuche to test his skills and get his body used to extreme altitude.

When he finally reached the 8,848.86-meter top of Everest, he felt many emotions at once. He was full of joy, relief, grateful, and deep exhaustion. Thinking about his life back home, he shared later that at the top of the world, he deeply missed his dog, Nurbu.

According to Da Dendi Sherpa, Managing Director of Glacier Himalaya Treks & Expedition, "Tshering Pasang Sherpa has successfully summited Mount Everest during the Everest Expedition 2026. At just 16 years and three months old, he has become one of the youngest climbers of this season to achieve this remarkable milestone. His courage, dedication, discipline and passion for mountaineering are truly inspiring and a proud example for the younger generation."

Tshering’s journey to the top was very challenging. He originally planned to climb the peak at age 15. However, Nepal’s mountain rules do not allow climbers under the age of 16. This forced him to wait to follow his dream. He used this waiting time to focus on his SEE exams and improve his physical training. His final journey up Everest began from Base Camp on May 14. He slowly moved up through the high camps, resting at Camp 4 for two nights before his final climb, and safely returned to Base Camp on May 22.

Tshering’s high altitude stamina in the mountains comes from years of dedicated sports training. He has been a regular wall climber for the past five years and an active mountain biker at the Nepal Cycling School (NCS) since the COVID period. The hard hours spent cycling and wall climbing helped him build the cardiovascular endurance, leg strength, and strict discipline necessary for high-altitude mountaineering. Tshering appreciates his time at NCS for providing the mental support and motivation throughout his journey.

“The most important part is believing in yourself,” the young climber said after his remarkable achievement. “Only you can define your limits.

” Behind his success is the strong support of his family, who accepted the big risks to help him follow his passion. “As his parents, we believe that we can guide our children on their journey to success by supporting their dreams and goals,” his parents shared. “We are very proud of his hard work and success at such a young age.”

Proving that age is just a number and limits are meant to be pushed, Tshering Pasang Sherpa’s amazing journey to the highest peak is sure to inspire a new generation of Nepali youths to chase their biggest dreams.
