Painting created at 5,000 metres in front of world's highest peak now displayed at mission
KATHMANDU: A German artist duo on Wednesday presented a gold-embellished painting of Mount Everest to the Embassy of Nepal in Berlin, marking a unique convergence of art and diplomacy.
Magdalena Wallbaum and Klaus R. Gerhold, who work together under the name MK Kunst am Limit, were received by Chargé d'Affaires a.i. and Head of Mission Sagar Prasad Phuyal at the embassy, where they formally handed over a special copy of their Everest artwork.
The original painting was created in November 2025 under extreme conditions at an altitude of 5,000 metres — directly in front of the world's highest mountain. The version presented to the embassy has been further refined by the artists and enhanced with gold leaf, symbolising Everest's status as the world's highest peak and its cultural significance to Nepal.
The artwork has been given a prominent place in the reception hall of the Nepalese mission, where it will be on display for guests and visitors.
During the meeting, Wallbaum and Gerhold discussed the cultural importance of Mount Everest with the Nepalese diplomats and explored possibilities for future artistic cooperation between Nepal and Germany. First Secretary Ranjan Yadav was also present at the ceremony.
The artists described the work as both an artistic and physical achievement, given the challenging high-altitude conditions under which it was created.
"We are grateful for the appreciation of our work and for the opportunity to build a cultural bridge between Nepal and Germany through art," the duo said in a statement following the presentation.
The embassy reception marked a recognition of the artists' dedication to capturing one of the world's most iconic natural landmarks through their craft.
