Tashi Gyalzen Sherpa receives certificate for record-breaking spring season feat
KATHMANDU: The Guinness World Records has officially recognized a record-setting achievement by a Nepali Sherpa climber who amazed the mountaineering world during last spring season.
The GWR awarded a world record certificate to Tashi Gyalzen Sherpa for successfully climbing Mount Everest four times in a single season — a feat accomplished within just 15 days in May 2025.
"The most ascents of Mt Everest (8,848.86m) in one season is four by Tashi Gyalzen Sherpa of Nepal who climbed the world's highest mountain from Nepal (south) side on 9, 14, 19 and 23 May 2025," the GWR stated.
Pride for Sherpa community
The 30-year-old climber from Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality-4 in Solukhumbu said receiving the official certificate was a proud moment. "It's not only my personal record but also a great recognition to Sherpa climbers who are often termed as the backbone of Mt Everest climbing," Sherpa said.
Working with 8K Expeditions, Sherpa first scaled Everest on May 9 as part of the rope-fixing team that opened the climbing route to the summit. He then returned to the summit on May 14, climbing solo without clients. His third ascent came on May 19 when he guided a client to the top, followed by another solo climb on May 23.
Veteran climber with extensive experience
Born on 1996, Tashi Gyalzen Sherpa began his mountaineering career in 2017 with an Everest Base Camp trek. His professional journey has taken him to some of the world's highest peaks over the past eight years.
His climbing résumé includes six successful Everest summits — in 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, and four times in 2025. He has also summited Cho Oyu (8,201m) in autumn 2019, Ama Dablam (6,812m) in 2021, and Manaslu (8,163m) in 2022. In 2023, he joined the rope-fixing team on Shishapangma (8,027m), reaching near the summit.
Sherpa has completed professional training in basic and advanced ice climbing at Khumbu Climbing Centre, along with first aid certification. His mountaineering career includes work with several prominent expedition companies including Tengboche Trekking Pvt. Ltd., Alpen Glow, Shangri-La Nepal, and 14 Peaks Expedition, where he has served as both a guide and rope-fixing team member.
Growing recognition
The Guinness World Record recognition adds to the growing list of achievements by Nepali Sherpa climbers, who continue to set benchmarks in high-altitude mountaineering while supporting international climbers in their summit bids.
Sherpa's four ascents in 15 days demonstrate not only exceptional physical endurance but also the technical expertise and acclimatization capabilities required for repeated climbs at extreme altitude in a compressed timeframe.
The record highlights the evolving role of Sherpa guides from support climbers to record-breaking mountaineers in their own right, earning international recognition for their extraordinary feats in the Himalayas.
