Medical teams deployed to assist trekkers; free altitude illness lectures offered daily

KATHMANDU: The Himalayan Rescue Association Nepal (HRA) has officially launched its Spring 2026 operations, deploying specialist medical teams at three aid posts across Nepal's most frequented high-altitude trekking and climbing corridors.

The Manang Aid Post, Pheriche Aid Post, and HRA Everest Base Camp Emergency Room (Everest-ER) are now open and operational, staffed by a mix of international and Nepali volunteer doctors, informed HRA Chairman Damber Parajuli.

At the Manang Aid Post (3,550m), on the Annapurna Circuit route, Dr. Joseph Peter Mahoney of the USA and Dr. Ken-Tze Koh of Australia are stationed, supported by Aid Post Assistant Prakash Khatri.

The Pheriche Aid Post (4,250m), on the trail to Everest Base Camp, is staffed by Dr. Rebecca Ellen Carpenter of Australia, Dr. Kaitlin Brooke Harper of the USA, and Dr. Aakriti Singh of Nepal, with Aid Post Assistant Ang Dawa Sherpa and Officer Thaneshwar Bhandari, providing support.

At HRA Everest-ER, located at Everest Base Camp and operational every spring season since 2003, Dr. Samantha Alison Wills of Australia and Dr. Prince Singh of Nepal are on duty, assisted by HRA Staff Lakpa Norbu Sherpa.

Established in 1973, HRA has been providing medical support in remote mountain regions to reduce casualties among trekkers and climbers. It operates permanent aid posts in Manang and Pheriche and has been running a seasonal medical camp at Everest Base Camp since 2003.

The organisation has also announced daily altitude illness awareness lectures at 3:00 pm at its aid posts, encouraging trekkers to attend and better prepare for high-altitude conditions.
