Himalayan Rescue Association trains Icefall Doctors ahead of Everest season

Two-day programme focuses on emergency care, altitude illness and mountain safety

KATHMANDU: The Himalayan Rescue Association Nepal (HRA) has completed a specialised two-day training programme for Icefall Doctors, the team responsible for fixing and maintaining the hazardous Khumbu Icefall route on Mount Everest.

The training aimed to strengthen life-saving skills for work in extreme high-altitude conditions. Key components included wilderness first aid for remote emergencies, identification and management of altitude-related illnesses such as acute mountain sickness (AMS), high-altitude pulmonary oedema (HAPE) and high-altitude cerebral oedema (HACE), as well as mountain safety, risk management and rescue protocols.

HRA said enhancing the medical and safety capacity of Icefall Doctors is crucial to reducing accidents and casualties, and to ensuring a safer climbing season in the Himalayas.

The association congratulated the participants for their commitment to safety and professional excellence.
