British mountaineer extends own record for most ascents by a foreign climber

KATHMANDU: Renowned British climber Kenton Cool has made history once again by reaching the summit of Mt Everest for the 19th time, breaking his own record for the most ascents of the world’s highest peak by a foreign climber.

Cool, 52, from Gloucestershire in South West England, reached the 8,848.86-metre summit along with Dorjee Gyaljen Sherpa at around 9:15 AM, according to base camp officials. This marks Dorjee Gyaljen’s 23rd successful ascent of Everest.

With this latest climb, Cool also extends his own British record for the highest number of Everest summits.

A veteran of high-altitude expeditions, Cool became the first British mountaineer to summit Mt Nuptse, Mt Everest, and Mt Lhotse in a single season in 2013. In 2021, he scaled Mt Lhotse less than 29 hours after summiting Everest, an impressive feat showcasing his enduring stamina and alpine skill.

Cool’s continued success underscores both the international appeal of Everest and the enduring partnership between foreign climbers and Nepali Sherpas in Himalayan mountaineering.
