KATHMANDU: Mexican mountaineer Luis Edgardo González has successfully summited Carstensz Pyramid, completing the Seven Summits challenge once again and becoming the oldest Mexican to achieve the feat.
González, widely known as Luis Alvarez Ironman, reached the peak on February 27, according to 14 Peaks Expedition, which supported the climb.
With the ascent of Carstensz Pyramid, the highest peak in Oceania, González reaffirmed his place among elite high-altitude climbers. The Seven Summits challenge involves scaling the highest mountain on each continent.
A seasoned endurance athlete, González is also recognised for completing more than 200 triathlons and holding a record for participating in Ironman races worldwide, reflecting a career that bridges extreme sport and mountaineering.
14 Peaks Expedition, led by its chief executive Tashi Lakpa Sherpa, said the achievement demonstrates that age is no barrier to high performance when backed by determination and discipline.
