Historic climb opens new era for adventure tourism in the hidden valleys of Mustang
KATHMANDU: In a significant achievement for Himalayan exploration, climbers have set foot for the first time on Chhuama Peak III (6,268m), a previously unclimbed summit rising near Namdo village in Lomanthang Rural Municipality–4, Upper Mustang.
The historic ascent was accomplished by the “2025 Jeju International Mountaineering Expedition (Chhuama Peak III – 6,268m)”, which reached the summit around noon on November 2 after a ten-hour climb from base camp (5,480m). At the top, the team proudly raised the flags of Nepal and South Korea, symbolising friendship and shared mountain spirit, according to Wongchu Sherpa, Managing Director of Trekking Camp Nepal, which managed the expedition.
The successful climbers included Kim Dongjin (Team Leader), Kim Hyon Chul, and Oh Namyong from South Korea, and Dawa Phurten Bhote (Climbing Sherpa) and Mingmar Sherpa (Climbing Sherpa) from Nepal. Base camp guide Karma Sherpa and supporting crew members were also part of the eight-member expedition.
The climb was the result of careful planning and collaboration, Sherpa added.
“This is a historic step for Nepal’s adventure tourism,” Sherpa said. “It proves that even in the well-known Himalayas, there are still new frontiers waiting to be explored. Chhuama Peak III’s first ascent highlights Mustang’s potential as a world-class destination for responsible and sustainable adventure.”
Prior to the expedition, a technical team from Trekking Camp Nepal conducted a reconnaissance and route study on October 18, paving the way for the ascent.
After their return, the team was warmly honoured by the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Lomanthang Office with traditional khadas and certificates.
ACAP Chief Umesh Paudel remarked that the successful climb will bring global attention to the hidden beauty of Upper Mustang.
“The first ascent of Chhuama Peak III will inspire more mountaineering and adventure activities in this pristine region and contribute to the local economy and culture,” Paudel said.
The Chhuama Himal region comprises three major summits, of which Chhuama Peak III (6,268m) has now been climbed for the first time in history.
Established in 2001, Trekking Camp Nepal has been pioneering unclimbed peak expeditions and eco-friendly adventure travel, continuously working to promote Nepal as a safe, responsible, and premier adventure destination.
