KATHMANDU: A team of strong climbers has successfully recovered the body of a Czech climber who died at 7,300 m on Mt Makalu II, popularly known as Kangchung Tse, while attempting to scale the mountain in alpine style.

“Five rescuers successfully brought the body of David Roubinek, 38, from 7,300 m to the high camp (6,100 m) of Mt Makalu this morning,” said Pemba Jangbu Sherpa, managing director at I AM Treks and Expedition.

Despite facing tough weather conditions, the team of climbers coordinated by Mingma Sherpa, chairman of Seven Summit Treks, successfully carried out the daring recovery mission, according to the expedition organisers.

The rescuers, who were involved in the recovery mission, include Lakpa Temba Sherpa, Lok Bahadur Chamlagain, Nawang Thindu Sherpa, Dawa Sange Tamang, and Ridar Lama Bhote, all from Makalu, Sankhuwasabha.

David was part of a seven-member expedition led by Lukas Madr, 23, and locally managed by I AM Treks and Expedition. David, who fell ill at around 7,400 m, breathed his last at 7,300 m when fellow climbers were helping him to descend on May 4.

As requested by the expedition organiser, Seven Summit Treks (SST) has mobilised a team to carry out the recovery mission. “Now, we are waiting for fair weather to airlift his body from the high camp,” Pemba Jangbu shared.
