KATHMANDU: Russian climber Artem Gurshtein has completed one of the fastest known ascents of Mt. Manaslu, reaching the 8,163-metre summit and returning to base camp in under 44 hours, according to 14 Peaks Expedition, which managed the climb’s logistics.
Tashi Lakpa Sherpa, CEO of 14 Peaks Expedition, said Gurshtein arrived at Manaslu Base Camp at 12:55 p.m. on September 21, began his ascent at 3:30 a.m. on September 22, and stood on the summit at 6:06 a.m. on September 23. He was accompanied by Sherpa guide Ngima Dorji, Sherpa added.
He descended to base camp the same night at 10:58 p.m., and by 7:52 a.m. on September 24, he had flown back to Kathmandu.
The entire expedition—from his arrival in Nepal to departure from base camp—was completed in just two days and 19 hours on the mountain and less than four days in Nepal, making it Gurshtein’s fastest Himalayan climb to date.
