KATHMANDU: Ukrainian mountaineer Valentyn Sypavin and Sherpa climber Dawa Tenjen Sherpa of 8K Expeditions reached the summit of Makalu (8,485m), the world's fifth highest peak, on May 8.

The duo reached the summit att 2:00 PM Nepal time, according to Lakpa Sherpa, Expedition Leader and Managing Director of 8K Expeditions.

Sypavin, 42, owner of Ukrainian adventure company Alpomania, is one of the most decorated high-altitude climbers active today. He has summited Everest eight times and has also scaled K2 and Lhotse. He holds a Guinness World Record for the highest altitude kayaking, achieved at 6,370 metres in Atacama, Chile. He is also a former vice-champion of the Ice Climbing World Cup.

The Makalu ascent is his second major summit with 8K Expeditions this spring, having earlier climbed Dhaulagiri (8,167m) during the same season. The pair are now preparing to move to their next objectives: Everest and Lhotse, which Sypavin has previously completed as a traverse — doing so twice, in 2021 and 2023, in collaboration with 8K Expeditions.

Dawa Tenjen Sherpa is a climbing guide from Makalu-03, Sankhuwasabha, and works with 8K Expeditions.
