KATHMANDU: Mike Harker, Public Affairs Chief at the US Embassy Nepal, successfully summited Mount Everest on May 20 at 9:10 AM, becoming the first serving American Foreign Service Officer to scale the world's highest peak.

Undertaken in his personal capacity, Harker's summit is the culmination of a 20-year journey that began with a 2006 trek to Annapurna Base Camp, the experience that first sparked his lifelong connection with Nepal.

The US Embassy described the feat as a milestone for both mountaineering and diplomacy, noting it underscores nearly eight decades of US-Nepal friendship. The achievement has also been linked to Freedom 250, the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence.

The embassy credited Nepal's Sherpa community as the "true backbone" of Himalayan mountaineering, saying the summit would have been impossible without their expertise and dedication.

The climb, the embassy said, highlights how sustainable adventure tourism builds global connections while supporting local economies, and underscores the importance of protecting Everest for future generations.

The expedition was organised by Seven Summits Treks and renowned Sherpa climber Makalu Lakpa and Mikel Sherpa guided him to the top of Mt Everest.
