KATHMANDU: A Nepali woman climber who fell into a deep crevasse just below Camp II on Mt Everest has been rescued safely, said an expedition organizer.
Upasana Gurung, a member of the Everest expedition, was injured after she fell into a 40-meter-deep crevasse at 6,300m when heading for the South Col from Camp I on May 18, said Lakpa Sherpa, Managing Director of 8K Expeditions, from base camp.
After mobilizing a strong team of Sherpa rescuers from 8K, she was rescued safely with support from other expedition companies in the evening. Lakpa added that she was then brought to Camp I.
Upasana suffered minor injuries during the fall and was evacuated from Camp I this morning, according to Lakpa. She is now being taken to a Kathmandu hospital for treatment, he said, adding that her condition is stable.
Upasana, who climbed Lobuche peak on April 19 along with Mingma Thendu Sherpa, was planning to summit Everest this spring season.
