Fair conditions expected after weeks of rain and snowfall disruptions

KATHMANDU: After weeks of erratic weather marked by unseasonal rain, snowfall, and the lingering effects of a late-season cyclone, clear skies have finally returned across most parts of Nepal. The country’s high-altitude trekking trails are quickly regaining their post-monsoon charm, as stable weather settles over the Himalayas—offering a much-needed window for adventurers before the onset of winter.

According to the Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD), mainly fair weather is expected nationwide over the next 24 hours, with partly cloudy conditions limited to the hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces. Tonight, fair skies are forecast to continue across the plains and mountain valleys.

Meteorologists confirmed that no significant weather system is currently influencing Nepal, bringing a welcome pause after weeks of instability that affected flights, trekking routes, and high-altitude expeditions during the peak autumn season.

The traditional “golden season” for trekking, mid-September to November, was severely disrupted this year by the unusual convergence of a Western Disturbance and residual moisture from Cyclone Montha in late October. This rare combination triggered widespread, unseasonal rainfall in the hills and destructive early snowfalls across popular trekking routes. The heavy snow buried high passes, stranded trekkers, and led to flash floods and landslides in lower regions, forcing temporary suspensions of travel and rescue efforts.

With the weather system now cleared, Nepal has returned to its classic crisp November skies—ideal for mountain viewing, trekking, and outdoor travel. While higher passes remain snow-laden and require proper gear, major trails and city tours are fully open, offering exceptional post-storm visibility and clean air.

As per the latest MFD update, Kathmandu will see partly cloudy skies with highs of 21°C–23°C and lows of 9°C–11°C. Pokhara will remain partly cloudy (23°C–25°C / 13°C–15°C), perfect for sightseeing and short hikes. Jomsom will record highs of 14°C–16°C and lows of 1°C–3°C, while Jumla enjoys clear skies with daytime temperatures between 20°C–22°C and nighttime lows down to –3°C. Bhairahawa will experience morning mist clearing to fair weather, with highs of 28°C–30°C.

With fair weather prevailing once again, Nepal’s tourism industry is expected to see renewed momentum after one of the most weather-challenged autumn seasons in recent years.
