KATHMANDU: The Department of Immigration has fined a trekking agency and four Mexican nationals for entering the restricted area of Lower Dolpa without obtaining the required trekking permits.

The department fined Mount Rose Tours & Travels Pvt Ltd Rs50,000 under Section 10(4) of the Immigration Act, 2049, after the District Administration Office, Dolpa, reported that the agency had taken the four Mexican nationals into the restricted area without permits.

The four tourists were each fined Rs10,000 under the same provision and required to pay the applicable trekking permit fee of US$20 per person per week.

The Department of Immigration said trekking in restricted areas requires prior permission under Rule 32 of the Immigration Regulation, 2051. It urged foreign nationals, trekking agencies and other concerned parties to comply with the permit requirements and said agencies taking foreign tourists into restricted areas must be registered with its system.

The department said the action was taken to ensure trekking tourism remains safe, regulated and compliant with Nepal’s laws.
