KATHMANDU: Nepal Tourism Board has moved to counter a wave of misinformation circulating across media outlets and online platforms regarding travel rules for Indian visitors, flatly rejecting claims that the government has imposed new entry restrictions on Indian tourists.
In a press release issued Wednesday, NTB said reports claiming that the Government of Nepal has mandated identity cards for Indians crossing the Nepal–India border, capped tourist stays at 30 days, or authorised vehicle confiscation for overstays are entirely false and baseless.
"The Government of Nepal has introduced no new policy restricting the duration of stay for Indian tourists, nor has any change been made to the longstanding open-border arrangements and bilateral understandings between Nepal and India," NTB said, adding that people-to-people relations, cultural ties, and tourism cooperation between the two countries remain unchanged.
NTB clarified that the only recent policy change related to Indian — and other international — visitors is a new online facilitation system introduced to make cross-border travel more convenient, not more restrictive. Developed by the Department of Customs under the Ministry of Finance, the digital system allows foreign vehicles entering Nepal via land routes to complete temporary entry permits and revenue payments entirely online, removing the need for manual processing at border points. The board urged media organisations, digital platforms, tourism stakeholders, and the general public to rely only on official government sources for updates on tourism policies and travel regulations, and to refrain from sharing unverified information.
Nepal remains a safe and welcoming destination for visitors from India and around the world, NTB said, reaffirming the government's commitment to smooth cross-border travel, sustainable tourism, and high-quality visitor experiences.
