Heavy rain forecast through November 1; trekking in Everest and eastern hills affected while western regions remain clear
KATHMANDU: The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has issued a three-day weather alert, urging travelers and trekkers to remain cautious as moderate to heavy rainfall continues across eastern and central Nepal. The advisory, valid through November 1, highlights risks of flash floods, landslides, and temporary road closures that may affect travel plans and trekking schedules.
The NTB said government and emergency agencies are actively monitoring highways, airports, and popular trekking routes to ensure visitor safety.
Regions under alert
As of Thursday, high alerts are in effect across Koshi, Madhesh, and Bagmati Provinces, including Chitwan, Makwanpur, Nawalpur, and Ramechhap. Central and mid-hill areas of Gandaki Province—such as Kaski, Lamjung, Myagdi, and Gorkha—are under moderate watch.
Rain is expected to continue into Friday, gradually subsiding from the west by Saturday, when clear skies are likely to return to Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim Provinces.
Travel and trekking impact
The Koshi Highway in Sankhuwasabha and Mechi Highway in Ilam have been temporarily closed due to landslides and heavy rain. A landslide near Koshi Rural Municipality in Kavre has restricted movement to a single lane on the BP Highway, and the Rasuwa–China border bridge remains closed following flooding.
While domestic and international flights remain largely unaffected, NTB notes that trekkers in the Everest, Langtang, Solukhumbu, Ilam, and Taplejung regions should expect slippery trails, limited visibility, and unstable slopes. High passes such as Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La are advised to be avoided until conditions stabilize.
In contrast, trekking regions in Annapurna, Mustang, and Dolpo remain clear and open, offering safe travel conditions.
Traveler guidance
NTB urges visitors to:
Check local weather and road updates daily.
Follow guidance from guides and local authorities.
Avoid camping or walking near swollen rivers and streams.
Inform the Tourist Police (1144) and local guides about travel routes.
Refer to official updates via www.hydrology.gov.np, www.dhm.gov.np/weather, and www.bipad.gov.np
Despite the temporary disruptions in the east, western Nepal continues to offer stable weather and safe trekking experiences for visitors this weekend.
