KATHMANDU: The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution declaring April 15 as International Wellness Day, following a proposal led by Nepal.

"The resolution underscores that health goes beyond the absence of illness—embracing physical, mental, social, cultural, emotional, and ecological well-being. It also promotes preventive care, healthy lifestyles, and inclusive health systems to build stronger and more resilient societies worldwide," the Nepal Mission to the UN said.

We sincerely thank all co-sponsoring countries and fellow Member States for their support and cooperation throughout the process, it added.

According to the Nepal Tourism Board, the global observance will begin this year and aims to promote a broader understanding of health that goes beyond the absence of disease to include physical, mental, social, cultural, emotional and environmental wellbeing.

Tourism officials say the recognition places Nepal in a strong position to contribute to the global wellness movement, given the country’s long-standing traditions of yoga, meditation, mindfulness and nature-based living.

The initiative is also expected to support the promotion of wellness tourism in Nepal, highlighting the country’s potential as a destination for holistic travel experiences.

The tourism board expressed appreciation to the Government of Nepal, the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations, and other member states and organisations that supported the adoption of the resolution.
