Domestic and international flights remain suspended; travelers advised to stay updated

KATHMANDU: The Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) Civil Aviation Office has announced an extension of the airport's complete closure until further notice. Passengers were also advised not to come to the airport until they have confirmed with their airline that operations have resumed.

This decision was made in response to a government-imposed curfew, a deteriorating security situation in the valley, and the presence of smoke on the runway, which poses a serious risk to the safety of aircraft takeoffs and landings.

The airport was first shut down on Tuesday after escalating demonstrations led to multiple fire incidents in areas such as Gothatar, prompting authorities to halt operations over safety concerns and Nepali Army deployed to maintain security at Nepal’s only international gateway.

With flights grounded for a second consecutive day, many passengers – both outbound and inbound – remain stranded in Kathmandu. Airlines and travel agencies have urged travelers to monitor official updates and maintain contact with their carriers before heading to the airport.

Despite the disruption, tourism stakeholders are hopeful that operations will resume once stability is restored, as the autumn trekking season is just beginning.
