KATHMANDU: Record-holding climber and tourism entrepreneur Tashi Lakpa Sherpa has called on the government and aviation authorities to address recurring delays and cancellations on Kathmandu-Lukla flights, warning that unreliable air services are affecting tourists and businesses during the busy trekking season.

In a Facebook post, the chief executive officer of 14 Peaks Expedition questioned the lack of accountability in flight operations and air traffic control (ATC), and urged authorities to explain the causes of repeated disruptions and the measures being taken to improve flight management and passenger safety.

Photographs shared from Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla show large numbers of tourists waiting in the boarding area. Tara Air and Summit Air operate daily flights to Lukla using Twin Otter aircraft, but services are frequently delayed or cancelled because of unpredictable weather.

Sherpa said flight uncertainty wastes tourists' time and money and puts trekking companies' bookings, commitments and business reputations at risk. Hotels, guides, porters and local communities also face the consequences of disruptions at Lukla, a major gateway to the Everest region.

He called for clear answers on the reasons for repeated delays, the responsibilities of ATC and other agencies, measures to improve flight management, and ways to address the financial losses faced by tourism businesses.

Sherpa said promoting Nepal as a tourism destination was insufficient without safe, reliable and timely air services. He urged the media to investigate the problem and press the relevant authorities for accountability and practical improvements.
