KATHMANDU: International flight operations at Tribhuvan International Airport were temporarily disrupted Monday morning after a Turkish Airlines aircraft caught fire in its tyres upon landing, though all those on board escaped safely.

Flight TK726, which had arrived from Istanbul, touched down at around 6:45 am when fire broke out in the landing gear. The blaze was swiftly contained by airport fire crews. The aircraft came to a halt on the main runway, bringing international arrivals and departures to a standstill before it was towed to a taxiway and normal operations resumed.

The flight carried 273 passengers and 11 crew members, all of whom were evacuated through emergency exits. Some passengers sustained minor injuries during the evacuation. The aircraft was reportedly also transporting some human remains and cargo.

Airport officials said the runway had been temporarily closed for a technical inspection following the incident. The situation is now normal, officials said.

Authorities said a technical investigation into the cause of the fire was under way.
