KATHMANDU: A search and recovery team led by renowned Nepali climber Mingma G recovered four bodies of climbers, including Nirmal Purja ‘Nimsdai,’ from around 5,700m on Broad Peak this afternoon.

“Bodies of Nimsdai, Kili Pemba Sherpa ‘Kilu,’ Nima Sherpa, and Chinese climber Wang Zhong were recovered and are being taken down to plain area of the Concordia side of the mountain,” said officials who are now at Ali Camp.

At least 10 climbers (Nepali and Pakistani) reached Broad Peak base camp for the recovery mission this morning. Among them, eight members reached Camp I. “Then, five members including Mingma G reached the avalanche site, where four bodies were spotted during a drone inspection,” officials coordinating the mission told The Tourism Times.

Mingma G, Pakistani climber Sirbaz Khan, Dawa Sherpa (Speed Dawa), and Pam Dorchi Sherpa, among others, were involved in the recovery mission.

“Four bodies have been recovered, while another body—that of Nawang Thinduk Sherpa—was not brought down, as his body was located in a dangerous position above 6,000m,” they said.

While recovering the four bodies from around 5,700m, the team witnessed two avalanches nearby and could not proceed further up to attempt to recover Nawang Thinduk’s body, they added.

“All four bodies are being be brought to Concordia side, from where a helicopter could ferry them to Skardu,” officials said.

The body of Gyalu Sherpa has already been recovered, as the team found him at around 5,000m. “All five bodies will be airlifted to Skardu on Monday,” officials said.

Earlier, the bodies of Omani climber Nadhira Al Harthy and Pur Bahadur Gurung (Yukta), as well as the mortal remains (a human leg) of American woman climber Mallory Geis, were airlifted to Skardu.

Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi, who also perished in Thursday’s avalanche, is still missing.

A massive avalanche killed 10 climbers just below Camp III on Thursday morning, when they attempted to make a summit push on the world’s 12th highest mountain. This is one of the worst mountaineering disasters in the Karakoram region.
