Bodies of two Manaslu avalanche victims airlifted to Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: The bodies of two climbers who died after being buried by an avalanche at Camp III of Mt Manaslu have been airlifted to Kathmandu.
Police said the bodies were brought by helicopter from Camp III to Samagaun in Chumnubri Rural Municipality-1, Gorkha, and flown to Kathmandu at around 7am on Wednesday by an Heli Everest helicopter.
The deceased have been identified as 47-year-old German national Dhruba Jyoti Guha and his 48-year-old Sherpa guide, Fursemba Sherpa of Sankhuwasabha.
According to expedition officials, the two were found dead inside a tent at Camp III on September 20 after heavy snowfall and an avalanche buried the camp. The bodies were later recovered and brought down from the mountain.
Mingma Sherpa, chairman of Seven Summit Treks, confirmed that a Heli Everest helicopter was used to transport the bodies.
The deaths had raised the number of fatalities on Mt Manaslu this autumn to four. A Singaporean climber, Lau Wee Seng, died below Camp II, while local porter Tashi Sherpa died at the base camp earlier in the season.
Adverse weather and heavy snowfall have disrupted autumn expeditions on Manaslu, with most climbing teams retreating to base camp or cancelling their summit attempts.
