KATHMANDU: A candlelight vigil and memorial ceremony was held at Maitighar Mandala in Babarmahal on Tuesday evening to honour the 10 mountaineers who lost their lives in the devastating avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan on July 30.

The memorial was jointly organised by the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA), the Nepal Climbing Sports Association (NCSA), and the Mt. Everest Summiter's Club Rolwaling Dolakha. Mountaineers, family members, friends, well-wishers and members of the public gathered to pay tribute to the climbers and express solidarity with those affected by the tragedy.

Organisers said the ceremony recognised the courage, legacy and outstanding contributions of the fallen mountaineers, whose achievements inspired the global climbing community. They said the climbers' dedication and passion for the mountains would continue to be remembered by mountaineers around the world.

Those who lost their lives in the Broad Peak avalanche were Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy of Oman, Sohail Sakhi of Pakistan, Wang Zhong of China, Mallory Geis of the United States, and Nepali climbers Nirmal "Nims" Purja, Pur Bahadur Gurung "Yukta", Kili Pemba Sherpa "Kilu", Nima Sherpa, Nawang Thindu Sherpa and Gyalu Sherpa. The memorial began at 5:45 pm and concluded with participants lighting candles and observing a moment of silence in their memory.
