KATHMANDU: Record-holding mountaineer Lakpa Sherpa, popularly known as Makalu Lakpa, scaled Gasherbrum II in Pakistan this morning, completing his ninth peak above 8,000m.
According to Chhang Dawa Sherpa, Expedition Director at Seven Summit Treks, Makalu Lakpa stood atop the mountain guiding Qatari mountaineer Asma Al Thani to the top.
“Makalu Lakpa scaled four 8,000m peaks in less than four months,” Chhang Dawa said.
On April 18, Makalu Lakpa scaled Annapurna I; on May 2, he scaled Mt. Makalu (8,485m) for the ninth time; on May 20, Mt. Everest; and on July 30, GII, according to Chhang Dawa. He holds the world record for most ascents of Mt. Makalu.
His eight-thousander record currently stands at Makalu nine times, Manaslu four times, Lhotse three times, Cho Oyu twice, Everest twice, and Dhaulagiri, Kangchenjunga, GII and Annapurna once each — nine of the world's fourteen eight-thousanders in total.
Makalu Lakpa will be attempting to scale Broad Peak in Pakistan this season, along with Qatari Princess Asma Al Thani. He has already completed four of seven summits.
