KATHMANDU: Manaslu has set a new record for autumn climbing permits, with 422 climbers from 35 expedition teams receiving permits to attempt the 8,163-metre peak this season, according to the latest Department of Tourism data.

The figure makes Manaslu by far the most sought-after mountain among the three peaks covered in the department's latest September 9, 2026 royalty report for the autumn season. The report shows that 441 climbers from 38 teams have obtained permits for Manaslu, Makalu I and Danga combined.

Of the 422 climbers permitted for Manaslu, 313 are men and 109 are women. The mountain has generated $1.266 million in climbing royalties so far this autumn.

The latest figures come as preparations for the Manaslu climbing season gather pace. The route to Camp III was opened and fixed with ropes on Thursday, allowing expedition teams to begin acclimatisation rotations and ferry equipment to the higher camps.

The Expedition Operators Association Nepal said the route would be extended towards Camp IV and the summit when weather and snowfall conditions become favourable.

The department's latest data show how heavily the autumn expedition season is concentrated on Manaslu. The mountain accounts for 35 of the 38 teams and 422 of the 441 climbers recorded across the three peaks.

Makalu I (8,463 metres) has attracted three climbers from one team, generating $4,500 in royalties, while Danga (6,220 metres) has received 16 climbers from two teams, comprising 14 men and two women, and generated $1,168.

Across the three mountains, the Department of Tourism has collected a combined $1,271,668 in royalties from the 441 climbers.

The latest Manaslu figures mark a notable rise from the earlier count reported on September 10, when 348 climbers from 29 teams had received permits. The new figures indicate that 74 additional climbers and six additional teams have been recorded in the latest update.

With the route now fixed up to Camp III, expedition teams are expected to continue acclimatisation rotations while waiting for favourable conditions to push higher on the mountain.
